Congressional Oversight of the Executive Branch: Current Challenges

Thursday June 11, 2020
12 pm – 1:30 pm Eastern Time Via Zoom

Congressional oversight of the executive branch is a constant feature of political life that dates back to the nation’s early years.  But disputes over such oversight rarely make it to court.  That situation is changing, with major litigation on congressional oversight currently pending before the U.S. Supreme Court and the en banc D.C. Circuit. This panel will discuss these pending cases and the questions about the constitutional scope of Congress’s investigatory powers that they present.

Panelists:

Nicholas McQuaid, Partner, Latham & Watkins; former Deputy White House Counsel, Obama Administration

Ashwin Phatak, Appellate Counsel at the Constitutional Accountability Center

Mark Rozell, Dean, Schar School of Policy and Government and Ruth D. and John T. Hazel Chair in Public Policy, George Mason University

Moderator:  Gillian Metzger, Harlan Fiske Stone Professor of Constitutional Law, Columbia Law School
